The Philadelphia Phillies are aiming for a World Series push, but this might be top stars final season with the team. Top veteran is set to become a free agent after the season and is performing like someone ready to command a major payday. Former Miami Marlins executive David Samson recently speculated on what he might seek in free agency, saying on his podcast Nothing Personal with David Samson that, “You can bet top star going to ask for close to $300 million.”
Samson also pointed out that Phillies president Dave Dombrowski might not be able to justify giving him a $30 million-per-year contract as he enters his age-33 season. Veteran star is currently finishing a four-year, $79 million deal and is clearly expecting a raise. A $300 million contract would make him the second-highest-paid designated hitter in the league, trailing only Shohei Ohtani.

Given Schwarber’s output with Philadelphia, that price tag might be warranted. He’s hit 171 home runs over four seasons with the team, led the NL in homers in 2022, and currently tops the league again this year with 40 home runs in 114 games. He’s hitting .256 with a .379 on-base percentage and a .585 slugging percentage. His MVP-level performance could drive his market value even higher. Still, offering $300 million to a player about to turn 33 would be a bold move. While the Phillies have shown they’re willing to spend big, it remains to be seen if they can or will meet Schwarber’s potential price.
