Top star will not suit up for the New York Rangers after the team chose to scratch him for disciplinary reasons.
The decision stems from Zibanejad missing a team meeting, as reported by The Athletic’s Vince Mercogliano. The Rangers confirmed the punishment will last just one game, with Zibanejad expected to return to the lineup on Tuesday.
Head coach Mike Sullivan addressed the situation, noting that timing issues related to the city played a role in Zibanejad being late.
Sullivan emphasized that Zibanejad understands the team’s expectations and the importance of following established rules.
The coach also spoke highly of the veteran forward’s character, saying Zibanejad feels genuine remorse over the incident and takes full responsibility. Sullivan described him as an honest and respected leader within the locker room.
Now in his 10th season with New York, Zibanejad has recorded 25 points this year, tallying 11 goals and 14 assists through 33 games.
The Rangers will face the Anaheim Ducks at home on Monday without him. Zibanejad is slated to return to action Tuesday night when New York hosts the Vancouver Canucks.
