Trevor Story, whom the Boston Red Sox signed to a six-year, $140 million contract in 2022, has finally begun to provide results. Story now has the option to opt out after this year, and he may choose to do so as his resurgence increases his value.
MLB insider Jeff Passan believes otherwise. According to Passan, Story could consider it, but at his age, giving up his remaining contract would be too hazardous, therefore he would most likely stay.
“The lack of shortstop depth in the class makes it tempting, but the combination of what Story is owed (two years, $55 million) and his age (33 next year) is too risky to give up, even after a strong comeback season,” said Passan.
This season, Story has been cutting. 260/.306/.436/.742, with 23 home runs, 88 RBI, and 25 stolen bases. He’s been an important part of the Sox offense this season, and he has a tremendous glove at shortstop.

Even if Story decides to leave and opt out, the Sox still have a backup plan for him. Next season, they’ll have Marcelo Mayer returning, who is a natural shortstop, and Kristian Campbell will be ready to take over second base, Story’s other position. Finally, Ceddanne Rafaela can come in from center field and play either position, but he excels there.

Overall, Story will most likely stay in Boston for the remainder of his deal. And if he can produce numbers similar to those he did this season, it will be worthwhile.
