With the Detroit Tigers considering downsizing their squad to reset their salary, they may deal Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to begin the process. Following that, their All-Star second baseman, Gleyber Torres, may be free to go this offseason as well.
To replace Torres, MLB Trade Rumors’ Steve Adams believes the Tigers should trade for another All-Star second baseman, Brendan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
“Donovan’s high-contact attitude, reasonable price, and defensive versatility make him a perfect fit for almost any contender. Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris has openly expressed a desire to reduce his lineup’s swing-and-miss tendencies, and Detroit may lose second baseman Gleyber Torres to free agency,” Adams said.

In 118 games this season, Donovan hit.287/.353/.422/.775 with 32 doubles, 10 home runs, and 52 RBI. He also received his first All-Star nod as the Cardinals’ representative.
Donovan would be an excellent addition for the Tigers, considering he is scheduled to earn $5.4 million next season, while Torres is expected to earn roughly $15 million on a new contract. If the Tigers are actually concerned about their salary, this would be a wise decision.

This also benefits the Cards since they will receive a decent prospect in exchange, allowing them to fully begin their rebuilding process. Hopefully, the Tigers recognize this and call the phone as soon as they can.
