The Minnesota Vikings are committed to J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback, but lingering concerns remain at the position.
What happens if the 22-year-old suffers another injury? More plausibly, what if McCarthy fails to meet expectations during offseason workouts?
Head coach Kevin O’Connell, who’s referred to himself as a “quarterback killer,” is in no rush to throw a young QB into the fire if they’re not ready.
“I think organizations often fail young quarterbacks before the quarterbacks fail them,” O’Connell told Rich Eisen last year, highlighting his belief that team structure and support are crucial to a quarterback’s development.
These uncertainties are part of the reason Aaron Rodgers hasn’t committed to a team for the upcoming season.
“There are teams wondering if he’s just waiting on the Vikings,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said during a May 21 appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show.” “It would be a great fit—Kevin O’Connell is one of the league’s top play-callers, and they have nine dome games per year.”
Fowler added that while there’s speculation, the Vikings appear set on McCarthy. “He really doesn’t have other options besides Pittsburgh or retirement.”
With the Vikings’ OTAs starting soon, all eyes will be on McCarthy.
Owner Mark Wilf Highlights McCarthy’s Leadership
McCarthy still has to prove himself on the field, but his off-field leadership has made a strong impression.
“He has a real magnetic presence as a leader,” owner Mark Wilf told KFAN’s Paul Allen. “The talent is there, and Coach O’Connell has been very complimentary of how he’s handled everything. We’re thrilled with him so far, and we’re backing him to succeed.”
Former Safety Cam Bynum Shares the Team’s Confidence

The Vikings are earning praise for their offseason strategy in preparation for the regular season.
Wilf’s remarks go beyond the usual leadership platitudes—they seem heartfelt, and that carries weight.
McCarthy’s commitment during his injury rehab also stands out. While many injured players fade into the background, he stayed engaged with the team, maintaining his presence and involvement throughout.
Former Vikings starting safety Cam Bynum, now with the Indianapolis Colts after signing in March, praised J.J. McCarthy’s intangible qualities that make him stand out—particularly his resilience, which is essential for succeeding in the NFL.
“I know he’s ready,” Bynum said during an appearance on Up & Adams. “He suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason, yet he showed up every single day—that alone speaks volumes. Most guys with a torn meniscus might be out of sight for the rest of the year unless you catch them rehabbing at odd hours. But J.J. was different. He was in team meetings, constantly engaging with us on defense, asking about coverages and situational plays. Those conversations continued throughout the season. It’s November, and he’s already fired up about next year, telling me how excited he is for the offense.”
“That kind of mindset earns my respect. I have no doubt he’ll rise to any challenge. They’re in good hands with him. No matter what happens, he’ll adapt and excel.”
