The Seattle Mariners continue to explore major free-agent possibilities, but they also made a low-profile signing that could pay off in a big way.
On Thursday, Seattle agreed to a contract with outfielder Brennen Davis, according to MLB writer Aram Leighton. Once considered among the game’s elite prospects, Davis now joins the Mariners as a potential sleeper addition.
From before the 2020 season through the start of 2023, Davis consistently ranked within Baseball America’s top 100 prospects. Ahead of the 2022 season, he was viewed as one of the best young players in baseball, coming in at No. 16 overall. The Chicago Cubs selected him in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of an Arizona high school.
Despite spending seven seasons climbing through the Cubs’ minor league system, Davis never reached the major leagues. He later moved to the New York Yankees organization for the 2025 season, where he appeared in 36 games at the Triple-A level. In that brief stretch, he posted an impressive .900 OPS and launched 12 home runs.
Injuries limited his playing time, but Seattle is betting that a healthy Davis can finally unlock the potential that once made him such a highly regarded prospect. If things break right, the Mariners may have found a low-risk, high-upside addition who could eventually break through at the major league level
