The Buffalo Bills are fully confident in Josh Allen as their franchise quarterback, but they’re not entirely at ease with the idea of giving his backup role to a former Pro Bowler.
There’s no question that the team’s success hinges on Allen, who remains the undisputed leader under center. However, the situation behind him is less settled.
Currently, Mitchell Trubisky a former Pro Bowl QB is listed as Allen’s backup on paper. But his hold on the role isn’t guaranteed.
Trubisky, once the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears, will be competing for a roster spot during training camp against Mike White. While Trubisky brings more starting experience, White has also shown flashes of competence as a fill-in starter, making the competition one to watch.
In a recent announcement, Bills general manager Brandon Beane made it clear that the team will not just hand Trubisky the backup position.
“We don’t lock a lot of spots in here,” the general manager said. We are aware that No. 17 is locked in, of course, but you essentially have to show up each year and prove yourself to be employed. Mitch is aware of that, I’m sure. He doesn’t have any different expectations.

Last season, Trubisky made nine appearances, finished over 73 percent of the games, scored two touchdowns, and had no interceptions. Since leaving the Bears, he has been a good backup quarterback.
White, on the other hand, is 2-5 as a spot starter and has a 61 percent completion rate in addition to 13 interceptions and nine touchdowns.
Is it reasonable to presume that Trubisky will serve as Allen’s backup right now? Although some may disagree, Buffalo is urging White and Trubisky to adopt a completely different perspective.
