Paul Finebaum believes there’s a clear and appealing option for Auburn’s head coaching vacancy — and it’s someone he says the fan base would fully support.
During an appearance on The Matt Barrie Show on Sunday, the longtime ESPN analyst broke down the ongoing coaching carousel and mentioned that Auburn might already have its preferred target in mind. “The betting favorite at Auburn is Jon Sumrall,” Finebaum said, referring to the rising Tulane coach who continues to build his résumé.

There’s plenty of logic behind that projection. Sumrall, who guided Tulane to another impressive win Friday night at Memphis, has steadily proven himself as one of college football’s most promising young coaches. His disciplined, team-first leadership style aligns perfectly with what Auburn needs to stabilize the program after years of inconsistency. Unlike the Tigers’ last two hires, Sumrall represents a fresh direction — a coach known more for structure and substance than flash.

Finebaum didn’t mince words when it came to his support for the idea. “It’s not the hire that wows America,” he said, “but if that ends up being the case — and we’re speculating — I think almost every Auburn fan that I’ve talked to would be thrilled. That job is so much better than I think it’s being given credit for.”
Sumrall’s résumé also makes him a natural fit. The Alabama native played linebacker at Kentucky and later returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach before taking over at Troy, then Tulane. Those SEC connections, coupled with his southern roots and proven ability to win, make him an easy name to rally around.
Offensively, his system could be just what Auburn needs. The Tigers have struggled to find consistency and rhythm on that side of the ball in recent years. Sumrall’s structure and adaptability would bring a more defined identity and help spark a stagnant attack.
If Auburn were able to land Sumrall, it would mark a significant step forward — signaling a commitment not just to short-term success, but to building a disciplined, competitive program for the future.
