Major Setback: Michigan State Loses Two More Prospects To Transfer Portal

With spring practice wrapped up and the transfer portal now open, it’s expected that several Michigan State football players will be on the move in the near future.

That trend began when 2023 starting safety Dillon Tatum entered the portal, signaling a possible search for a fresh start after three seasons in East Lansing. Tatum missed most of the 2024 season due to a season-ending injury suffered in the opener against FAU.  A few more Spartans had followed suit, and it’s likely that additional departures are on the horizon.

Some wide receivers from Michigan State’s 2024 recruiting class — outside of Nick Marsh — have decided to enter the transfer portal after seemingly slipping down the depth chart this offseason. The move isn’t all that surprising considering the staff brought in several transfer additions at the position, including Evan Boyd, Omari Kelly, Rodney Bullard Jr., and Chrishon McCray.

With Marsh still in the mix and Alante Brown competing for playing time, Michigan State’s receiver room is one of the stronger units in the Big Ten. But for guys like Brown and fellow 2024 signee Clay, upward mobility became increasingly difficult.

Both players should draw interest in the portal. Brown, a late riser in the 2024 cycle, was ranked the No. 66 receiver by 247Sports and held five offers. He impressed coaches like Courtney Hawkins last year while on the scout team and could potentially find a landing spot closer to his Texas roots. Clay, who was ranked No. 147 at his position and had seven offers, may also look to move closer to home in Ohio.

Don’t be surprised if even more names enter the portal in the coming days.
