Major Setback: UW Loses Another Top Talented Star To Rival Team

Wake Forest has picked up its third transfer of the offseason with the addition of Washington shooting guard.

A 6-foot-5 guard, spent two seasons at Rice before transferring to Washington, where he started 20 of 31 games this past season. He averaged 10 points and 1.4 assists in 24 minutes per game for the Huskies. The biggest draw for Wake Forest is Mason’s shooting—he’s a career 37% shooter from beyond the arc and hit a personal-best 40% last season. Had he met the 2.5 made 3-pointers per game threshold, that mark would have ranked him 40th nationally. Considering Wake Forest ranked 359th out of 364 Division I teams in 3-point percentage last season, adding a proven perimeter shooter like Mason could be a major boost.

Mason’s top performance came in a game against Nebraska, where he dropped 23 points and went 4-for-6 from deep. While he’s not strictly a 3-point specialist, that’s clearly his strength. He’s less effective inside the arc, hitting just 45% of his 2-point attempts last season and 41% from the field over his career. Last season marked the first time that more than half (55%) of his shots came from three, which is a trend Wake Forest will likely want to continue. His effective field goal percentage is 15 points higher when he’s shooting threes, so expect the Deacs to lean heavily on his outside shooting this season.
