The Boston Red Sox looked to be in control during last game against the Chicago White Sox, but momentum shifted quickly when starting pitcher exited with a right pectoral strain. With top star now placed on the 15-day injured list, the Red Sox have called up former Rookie of the Year, marking his first appearance in the majors since 2023.
He made a splash in 2016 with the Detroit Tigers, winning AL Rookie of the Year and earning an All-Star nod the following season. However, injuries and inconsistent performance derailed his career. He showed promise as a reliever in 2021 but struggled to sustain it. Now recovered from Tommy John surgery, Fulmer is getting another opportunity in Boston, likely stepping into the rotation to fill the gap left by Fitts.
“Former American League Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer, returning from Tommy John surgery, was brought up from the minor leagues Sunday when the Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Richard Fitts on the 15-day injured list with a right pectoral strain,” ESPN reported.
Red Sox hoping Michael Fulmer can return to form with Red Sox
It’s still unclear whether Michael Fulmer can recapture his past form, but he’s shown some promise in Triple-A to begin the season. Over three appearances, he’s allowed four earned runs across 11.2 innings and has notched 18 strikeouts. While success at the big league level is a much tougher challenge, Fulmer has proven before that he can pitch at an All-Star level.

His time in the majors may be short-lived, though, with Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and Liam Hendriks all nearing returns from injury. Still, Fulmer has a chance to make an impression while he’s up, and with Boston currently dealing with a rash of pitching injuries, it’ll be worth watching to see when he gets his first opportunity on the mound.
