The Philadelphia Phillies were forced to finish Saturday night’s game against the San Diego Padres without third baseman Alec Bohm, who exited due to an upper-body injury. According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, Bohm suffered a bruised left rib cage after being hit by a pitch from Padres starter Yu Darvish in the second inning at Petco Park.
Despite the painful blow, Bohm initially stayed in the game and eventually scored following a Nick Castellanos hit and a throwing error by Darvish. However, the Phillies appear to be exercising caution with Bohm, who has performed solidly this season. In his sixth year with the team, Bohm is batting .281 with eight home runs and 42 RBIs over 271 at-bats. He signed a one-year, \$7.7 million deal with Philadelphia in January. Edmundo Sosa took over at third base and could remain there through the All-Star break, depending on Bohm’s recovery.
Sosa made an immediate contribution, driving in Max Kepler and Brandon Marsh with a single in the fifth inning to put the Phillies ahead 4-3.

Philadelphia entered the game on a rough stretch, having dropped three of its last four games, including a 4-2 loss in the series opener. With the New York Mets beating the Royals earlier in the day, another Phillies loss could knock them out of first place in the National League East.
The series wraps up Sunday with Christopher Sanchez starting for Philadelphia and Nick Pivetta getting the nod for San Diego. After the All-Star break, the Phillies will open the second half of their season at home with a three-game series against Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels, beginning July 18 at Citizens Bank Park.
