Washington quarterback has entered the transfer portal. Less than a week after signing a new agreement to return to the Huskies for the 2026 season, Williams has reversed course. Four days into the current transfer portal window, the rising junior announced his decision to enter the portal with a no-contact designation, a signal that a destination is already in place. Early indications suggest that destination is LSU, where Lane Kiffin is set to take over as head coach.
Demond Williams Enters Transfer Portal

In today’s college football landscape, surprises are common, but this move out of Seattle comes close to the top. Head coach Jedd Fisch has consistently referred to Williams as the “face of the program,” emphasizing that Washington’s roster and future plans were built around its starting quarterback. Since arriving at UW alongside Fisch in January 2024, Williams was widely viewed as the long-term answer at the position.
As a true freshman, Williams appeared in all 13 games last season and started the final two. He took full control of the job in 2025, becoming the unquestioned starter. Offensive coordinator Jimmie Dougherty labeled him the “no-doubt” starter during spring practices. Williams went on to start all 13 games this year, passing for more than 3,000 yards with 25 touchdowns against eight interceptions. He also made a major impact as a runner, adding 775 sack-adjusted rushing yards and six touchdowns. That full skill set, however, will now be taken elsewhere in 2026.

Shortly after Williams shared his decision on social media, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that the University of Washington is prepared to explore all legal options to enforce the contract Williams signed just days earlier. The situation has also drawn attention from the Big Ten, as revenue-sharing compensation is part of the agreement. Williams’ move into the portal is notable not only for Washington, but for the broader college football landscape. The outcome could help set precedent for how player contracts are treated when outside financial offers come into play.

With Williams’ departure, Washington’s quarterback room is now notably inexperienced. The depth chart consists of two rising redshirt freshmen and one true freshman. As this situation continues to unfold, the Huskies are expected to actively search for a starting quarterback for the 2026 season.
