Stay or Go: Phillies Makes Last Move For Star Catcher After $115.5 Million Contract News

MLB free agency approaches as the postseason progresses, and the Philadelphia Phillies must decide on the future of one of their longest-tenured players.

J.T. Realmuto was moved to the Phillies during the big 2019 offseason, and he signed a five-year, $115.5 million contract in 2021. After seven seasons with the club, he might be on the verge of leaving for a new franchise.

Realmuto was one of baseball’s best two-way catchers during five seasons in Philadelphia. In 833 games, he batted.265 with a.778 OPS, earning two All-Star appearances, three All-MLB selections, two Gold Glove medals, and two Silver Slugger distinctions. According to Baseball Reference, his career total of 25.0 Wins Above Replacement puts him on track to reach 40.0 and maybe enter the Hall of Fame.

Realmuto’s market is a little hazy, with the Qualifying Offer perhaps playing a role, but he’s undeniably a strong player who should find a home soon, whether in Philadelphia or somewhere.

Spotrac estimates his market worth at $25+ million over a potential new two-year contract, which is still a reasonable price for the veteran catcher as he approaches his age-35 season.

The Verdict: Stay

Realmuto’s deteriorating talents as he gets older are a valid concern, especially given the price tag, but there is still a strong case for bringing him back.

The catcher has not only remained one of the top defensive players at his position, but he has also produced his fair share of offensive moments in huge situations. Despite some regression difficulties, he has maintained a 2.6 WAR or above and continues to shine out in one of MLB’s poorest positional groupings. The pitching staff is also quite familiar with how Realmuto calls games, frames pitches, and tosses down to bases, among other things, and replacing him may need a lengthy transition time.

Aside from that, the catcher market is incredibly shallow and lacks impact players. Moving on from Realmuto, with Rafael Marchan and Garrett Stubbs the only catchers on the 40-man roster, neither of whom has performed well in recent years, does not appear to be the best strategic move. If the club abandons its efforts to keep him, it will have to be incredibly inventive in replacing his presence on the roster.

On paper, managing the outfield, bullpen, and organizing their larger contracts is far more important, and allowing him to depart would be a needless risk. With significant changes expected at all levels of the Phillies’ team this summer, Realmuto is one piece that should remain consistent.
