The New York Rangers have had a mixed start to the 2025–26 season. As of now, they sit at 15-12-4 and rank fifth in the Metropolitan Division. With the standings extremely tight, the Rangers need to start stringing wins together to stay in the playoff race.

Consistency has been an issue. New York has managed just five wins in its last 10 games, which isn’t ideal given the competitiveness of the Eastern Conference. Their struggles at Madison Square Garden have also been noticeable, posting only a 3-8-3 home record.
Given their goal of returning to the postseason, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Rangers look to make roster upgrades—especially if a potential move helps them both now and in the future.
One clear area of need is the left side of their defense. Because of that, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram stands out as a logical trade target. Heavy Sports has proposed a deal that would send Byram to New York in a significant swap:
Rangers receive:
• Bowen Byram
Sabres receive:
• Brennan Othmann
• Braden Schneider
Byram Remains a Notable Trade Candidate
Byram’s name surfaced frequently in trade rumors over the summer. Although Buffalo ultimately re-signed him to a two-year, $12.5 million deal, he remains a player worth watching. The Sabres are enduring another disappointing season—11-13-4 and last in the Eastern Conference at the time of writing—and have dropped two straight. With a surplus of left-shot defensemen and Byram eligible to become a UFA in 2027, they could consider moving him for the right return.
Why Byram Fits the Rangers’ Needs
Even after adding Vladislav Gavrikov in the offseason, the Rangers still lack a true top-four left-shot defenseman to replace K’Andre Miller, who was traded to Carolina. Byram could fill that hole immediately.
At his best, he provides strong puck-moving ability and offensive upside. Last season, he tallied seven goals and set career highs with 31 assists and 38 points in 82 games. Through 28 games this season, he has six goals and 13 points.
