TAR HEEL MELTDOWN: PAIGE GONE, DAVIS FIRED… 5-STAR ON THE BRINK

Saying goodbye to Hubert Davis was already tough for North Carolina fans, but losing Marcus Paige right after is just as painful. If you missed the news, the Tar Heel legend is packing up and heading to Charlotte, leaving Chapel Hill to join Wes Miller’s newly formed coaching staff.

As if the fallout from Davis being fired wasn’t dramatic enough, Paige’s departure adds another major wrinkle—especially when it comes to recruiting. Paige will always be cherished by UNC fans, not only for his outstanding playing career but also for his impact as a coach. He quickly became a trusted voice on the trail and was instrumental in securing the commitment of five-star combo guard Dylan Mingo, one of the most prized recruits in the 2026 class.

With both Davis and Paige now gone, the unavoidable question is what this means for Mingo.

Concerns about Mingo’s commitment surfaced immediately after Davis was let go, with early reports suggesting it was still “too early to tell” how things might play out. Now, however, with Paige—arguably Mingo’s strongest connection within the program—also on his way out, those concerns have only grown louder.

Mingo and Paige developed a very close relationship, and there’s little doubt Paige played a major role in Mingo choosing North Carolina in the first place. If fans were already uneasy about whether the Tar Heels could hold onto him, that anxiety has now reached another level.

Mingo, a five-star prospect and the No. 2 combo guard in the country, narrowed his decision to North Carolina, Baylor, Penn State, and Washington before committing to the Heels. With his older brother currently playing at Penn State, it’s fair to wonder if the possibility of the two playing together could once again come into play.

Baylor was also making a serious push during his recruitment, and nothing about the current situation rules them out either. For now, Mingo remains committed to UNC, but the idea of him lighting up the Smith Center is far from a lock. The situation was already fragile, and Paige’s exit only complicates things further.

This is a storyline worth monitoring closely. With so much upheaval in Chapel Hill, all eyes are now on Mingo and whether these changes will ultimately lead him to rethink his future.
