Virginia Tech basketball head coach Mike Young continues to methodically rebuild his 2025 roster following another offseason of significant turnover. Despite another round of departures after the 2024-25 season ended in March, the Hokies successfully retained several key contributors, including Tobi Lawal, Ben Hammond, Tyler Johnson, and Jaden Schutt.
Young has been active in the transfer portal, bringing in three experienced transfers and an international big man to bolster the roster. The Hokies also signed two high school recruits earlier in the cycle — and added yet another one.
Top prospect, a 6-foot-4 guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, announced his commitment to Virginia Tech, further solidifying the backcourt depth and adding another versatile piece to Young’s evolving roster.
His journey to Virginia Tech is one of remarkable resilience and determination. Over four years ago, he was involved in a devastating car accident that left him with two broken legs. He spent months in a wheelchair and endured a grueling rehab process, essentially having to teach himself to walk again—all while navigating high school.

Despite flying under the radar for most of his prep career, Freeman made the most of his senior season at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte. He emerged as the team’s leader, averaging over 24 points per game and setting the school’s single-game scoring record. Unlike most high-level recruits, Freeman didn’t gain traction through the traditional AAU circuit, which may have limited his exposure. Still, his talent didn’t go completely unnoticed—Florida State extended a scholarship offer late in the process.
Now, Mike Young and Virginia Tech may have landed a hidden gem. Freeman is a long, athletic guard with a smooth shooting stroke and the kind of toughness you can’t teach. He won’t be rushed into a major role as a freshman, giving him time to develop in Blacksburg. His story is one Hokie Nation will no doubt rally behind.
