4-Year, $275 Million Contract: Miami Heat Gets Massive Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Update

The Miami Heat are reportedly the leading suitors to land Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason.

Whether a deal will be agreed in the coming months remains to be seen, but a potential exit from Milwaukee is increasingly being viewed as a real possibility for the Greek superstar.

According to Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang, the Heat have maintained strong interest for months and remain firmly in the mix as the Bucks evaluate their options around their franchise cornerstone.

“The one thing I can write with certainty is that the Heat is very interested in Giannis Antetokounmpo,” Chiang wrote. “But the Heat was also very interested in Antetokounmpo ahead of the NBA’s trade deadline in February before the Milwaukee Bucks ultimately decided to hold on to Antetokounmpo for the rest of the season.”

Miami is also believed to have put forward a substantial offer before the 2026 trade deadline. The proposed package reportedly included Tyler Herro, promising young players like Kel’el Ware, and multiple first-round picks, including the No. 13 selection in the upcoming draft.

Reports indicate the Bucks seriously considered the offer but ultimately chose to retain Antetokounmpo. However, Miami is expected to revisit discussions this offseason in hopes of landing the two-time MVP.

How Miami Heat Can Fit Star’s Salary Into Cap

The financial side of any potential deal for Antetokounmpo remains a major hurdle due to his max-level contract situation. Any team acquiring him would need to absorb a significant salary commitment.

“Antetokounmpo will definitely have some say in where he’s traded since he’s essentially on an expiring contract,” Chiang wrote. “He has a player option in his current deal for the 2027-28 season, providing him leverage to force his way to a specific team because of the long-term commitment teams will need from Antetokounmpo to give up the players and draft picks required to acquire him in a trade.”

“If Antetokounmpo is dealt, he would become eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million contract extension with his new team six months following the trade,” Chiang added.

To make the finances work, Miami would need to clear significant salary space, with estimates suggesting roughly $50 million in outgoing contracts would be required.

Herro’s deal stands out as the largest salary piece at around $33 million next season. Even so, additional contracts would likely need to be included, potentially thinning the Heat’s rotation if a deal progresses.

However, if Miami does move forward, gaining Antetokounmpo’s Bird Rights would give the franchise flexibility to re-sign or extend key supporting players without needing immediate cap space.

How Miami Can Benefit from Giannis Antetokounmpo

Heat have obvious reason to keep their Giannis dream alive

Landing Antetokounmpo would instantly reshape the Heat’s roster around a dominant superstar pairing featuring him and Bam Adebayo. That vision has long been a driving force behind Miami’s pursuit of the 31-year-old forward.

Such a move would immediately elevate Miami into serious championship contention, providing the star power the franchise has lacked in recent seasons. The combination of Antetokounmpo and Adebayo would create a powerful frontcourt duo capable of switching defensively, protecting the rim, dominating in transition, and generating consistent scoring.

Despite injuries and team struggles this season, Antetokounmpo continues to produce elite two-way performances. He has previously expressed a desire for a co-star in Milwaukee, and Adebayo could potentially fill that role in Miami’s long-term vision.
