ICYMI: UNC Officially Secures Commitment From ‘Elite’ 5-Star Center

The ink has just dried on a major addition for North Carolina, as Michael Malone continues reshaping the Tar Heels roster with another impactful move. In a significant late boost, the program has officially secured the commitment of 7-foot center, a highly touted five-star international prospect currently playing in Spain.

The 18-year-old originally from Mali, has been developing his game with FC Barcelona, one of Europe’s most respected basketball systems. While his minutes with the senior team have been limited, he has been making the most of his opportunities, averaging around three points and two rebounds in under 10 minutes per game. However, his production has been far more impressive at the U22 level, where he has posted 8.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per contest in league competition, showcasing his potential as a dominant interior presence.

Scoop: UNC Frontcourt Plan Taking Shape

This commitment comes after a lengthy recruiting process. Sayon Keita had previously taken an official visit to Chapel Hill last summer when the program was still under former head coach Hubert Davis. North Carolina ultimately beat out several powerhouse programs for his signature, including Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Duke, and UConn, underlining just how valuable this pickup is for Malone and his staff.

Keita’s arrival addresses a critical need in the frontcourt following the departure of Second Team All-ACC center Henri Veesaar, who recently declared for the 2026 NBA Draft. His size, rim protection, and developing offensive skillset are expected to immediately strengthen North Carolina’s interior rotation.

Notably, Keita becomes the second 7-footer to join the Tar Heels in as many days, linking up with Northwestern transfer Cade Bennerman to form a much bigger frontline. Malone’s aggressive roster rebuild doesn’t stop there either. The Tar Heels have also added several key transfers ahead of the 2026–27 season, including Neoklis Avdalas from Virginia Tech, Terrence Brown from Utah, Maxim Logue from Florida Atlantic, and Matt Able from NC State.

Alongside those transfers, incoming freshmen Maximo Adams and Malloy Smith are set to arrive, rounding out a rapidly evolving roster that is clearly being built to compete at the highest level.
