SAD NEWS: UNC Parts Ways With Transfer Forward Shortly After Commitment

North Carolina’s offseason has taken an unexpected turn, delivering a piece of news that caught many fans off guard. While the development may feel sudden to the public, there were signs behind the scenes that North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball and head coach Michael Malone were already preparing for this possibility. Florida Atlantic transfer will no longer be joining the program in Chapel Hill, ending what initially looked like a solid depth addition for the upcoming season.

The 6-foot-9 forward, had committed to North Carolina with the expectation that he would provide valuable minutes off the bench. Though he wasn’t projected to be a starter, his size and physical presence were seen as important assets, particularly in strengthening the team’s interior defense and rebounding rotation. However, according to Andrew Jones during an appearance on the Heel Report Podcast, academic complications ultimately prevented the move from becoming official.

The Tar Heels reportedly explored every avenue to help Maxim Logue gain admission, but once it became clear that the situation couldn’t be resolved, both sides had little choice but to move on. It’s a disappointing outcome for both the program and the player, especially considering Logue’s potential to contribute meaningful minutes in the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference next season.

Logue’s college journey has already included stops at multiple programs. He began his career with Oregon State Beavers men’s basketball before transferring to Florida Atlantic Owls men’s basketball for the 2025–26 campaign. During that season, he averaged 4.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, showing flashes of his ability to contribute as a role player. In his earlier stint at Oregon State, he posted 2.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest. Now, with his path to UNC closed, Logue will need to find a new destination to continue his collegiate career.

Despite this setback, North Carolina’s offseason remains far from discouraging. The program recently secured a major recruiting win with the commitment of five-star center Sayon Keita, who is widely expected to step into a starting role right away. In addition, depth has been bolstered by the arrival of Northwestern transfer Cade Bennerman, giving the coaching staff more options in the frontcourt rotation.

With Logue no longer part of the plans, a scholarship spot has opened, and the need for additional size remains. Several names have already emerged as potential targets, including Brice Dessert and international prospect Mouhamed Faye. As Malone and his staff continue to reshape the roster, attention will now shift toward finding the right pieces to reinforce the frontcourt ahead of the new season.
