Red Sox’s All-Star Named Potential Trade Candidate to Watch This Season
In a recent piece for Bleacher Report, Tim Kelly highlighted several unexpected trade candidates emerging early in the 2026 season. Among them was Red Sox pitcher Sonny Gray.
“Contending teams are always in need of starting pitching, though. If Gray—who is in the final guaranteed season of a three-year, $75 million contract—becomes available, he’ll garner interest,” Kelly wrote.
It is not difficult to see why Gray’s name is surfacing in trade chatter. Since he is in the final guaranteed year of his deal, Boston could consider moving him if the team continues to struggle, especially if they believe they can secure a strong return in a deal.
Even though the Red Sox have struggled overall, Gray has been steady to begin the season. Through six appearances, the 5-foot-10 right-hander has posted a 3–1 record with a 3.54 ERA and 15 strikeouts. If he maintains that level of performance, his trade value would likely rise as the deadline approaches.
Given his track record and continued effectiveness, Gray would be an appealing option for contenders looking to strengthen their rotations. As a result, the three-time All-Star could become one of the more closely watched names on the trade market this season.

Gray is not the only Red Sox player who could draw interest if the team fails to rebound. Other possible trade candidates include Jarren Duran, Aroldis Chapman, Willson Contreras, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, all of whom could potentially be moved depending on how the season unfolds.
