Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball strengthened its 2026 27 roster with a surprising commitment from Washington Huskies men’s basketball center Franck Kepnang, bringing in the seasoned big man whose career has been shaped by both production and persistent injury setbacks.
Kepnang, a 6 foot 11, 253 pound center from Cameroon, is not immediately eligible for the upcoming season due to NCAA timeline rules after spending multiple years in college basketball beginning in 2020 21 with the Oregon Ducks men’s basketball, and he was once on Kentucky radar during the John Calipari era.
Despite limited availability, he showed promise with the Washington Huskies men’s basketball team, appearing in 27 games last season while averaging 6.2 points on 51.5 percent shooting, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in 22.9 minutes per contest, including standout performances against Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball and Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball.

However, his journey has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries, including a torn ACL in 2022, another season ending knee issue the following year while at Oregon, and further setbacks in 2024 25 that restricted him to just 32 games over three seasons and caused him to miss the final six games of last year due to knee soreness.
The move arrives unexpectedly for the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball program under Mark Pope, with reports previously only suggesting interest rather than a firm commitment, yet it offers immediate familiarity with new point guard Zoom Diallo, who shared the court with Kepnang at Washington for two seasons.
From a roster perspective, the addition appears low risk with potential upside if he gains eligibility through medical hardship waivers, and it may also hint that Kentucky is preparing for uncertainty around Malachi Moreno and his NBA Draft decision while still exploring further frontcourt depth.
Kepnang also delivered a message to fans expressing confidence, gratitude, and determination as he looks ahead to contributing at Kentucky.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to join Kentucky Basketball and I am excited for what is ahead. My journey has had challenges but I have never stopped believing in my ability to compete at the highest level. I feel healthy, motivated, and ready to give everything I have to help this team win. To the fans, I want you to know that I am coming in with full energy and full commitment. I respect the history of this program and I understand the standard that comes with it. Every practice, every game, I will play with heart and focus. My goal is simple, to contribute, to improve, and to win championships. I am happy to be part of this family and I cannot wait to step on the court and show what I can do. We are going to compete the right way and bring pride back to Kentucky.”
