BREAKING: MLB Insider Confirms Unexpected Phillies Trade to Move On From Struggling Pitcher

The Philadelphia Phillies are approaching the 2026 MLB trade deadline with one obvious priority: upgrading their outfield, particularly by adding a right-handed bat.

With Adolis Garcia potentially sidelined for the remainder of the season and the Phillies continuing to struggle against left-handed pitching, adding a right-handed outfielder appears to be a logical move. However, the front office may not stop there when evaluating ways to strengthen the roster for a postseason push.

According to MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided, Philadelphia could also explore the starting pitching market as it searches for answers regarding rookie right-hander Andrew Painter.

“At this point, it would be a shock if the Phillies didn’t add a righty outfielder, and they very well may add in other areas as well, including the rotation,” Murray writes.

While much of the attention surrounding Philadelphia’s deadline strategy has focused on the outfield, Painter’s uneven rookie campaign has created another area of concern.

Phillies prized pitching prospect Painter set for MLB debut…

The highly regarded prospect entered the season with significant expectations, but his transition to the major leagues has not been seamless. Although the Phillies remain committed to Painter’s long-term future, the organization could pursue a veteran starter to provide stability and reduce the pressure on the young pitcher during a crucial stretch of the season.

Adding another arm would give Philadelphia additional insurance as it competes for playoff positioning and attempts to avoid relying too heavily on Painter before he is fully established at the big-league level.

That does not necessarily mean the Phillies will enter the bidding for elite trade targets such as Tarik Skubal, Joe Ryan, or other high-profile starters expected to generate significant interest around the league.

While starting pitching depth is becoming a concern, it may not be important enough for Philadelphia to sacrifice premium prospects, particularly considering the organization does not possess one of baseball’s deepest farm systems.

Instead, a more realistic approach could involve acquiring a lower-cost rental starter. Such a move would help reinforce the rotation, ease the workload on Painter, and provide additional depth after the club moved on from Taijuan Walker and endured inconsistent performances from its young right-hander.

The outfield remains Philadelphia’s most pressing need and is expected to be the franchise’s primary focus ahead of the deadline. Still, fans should not overlook the possibility of a pitching addition. Painter’s struggles have created a scenario in which strengthening the rotation could become an important secondary objective before the trade window closes.
