BREAKING: Cardinals Cut Ties With 30-Year-Old Veteran As Roster Changes Keep Coming

The St. Louis Cardinals continue to reshape their organizational depth as the season unfolds, with another veteran departing the organization in pursuit of a fresh opportunity. As the franchise remains committed to its rebuilding effort and prioritizes the development of younger talent, experienced minor league players have found it increasingly difficult to secure a path to the major league roster. One veteran standout at Triple-A delivered an impressive offensive campaign but was unable to break through to the big league club due to the team’s roster construction and long-term plans. Rather than waiting for an opportunity that may never have arrived, the experienced slugger has elected to continue his career overseas, where he is expected to receive both a larger guaranteed salary and a chance to play a more prominent role.

According to Bligh Madris’ MLB.com profile page, the Cardinals have released the veteran first baseman and outfielder. Brian Walton of The Cardinal Nation reported that Bligh Madris is expected to continue his career in South Korea after agreeing to join a team in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO).

Madris, 30, joined the Cardinals organization on a minor league contract before the season and enjoyed an outstanding campaign with Triple-A Memphis. Across 284 plate appearances, he posted a .277 batting average with a .389 on-base percentage and a .519 slugging percentage while belting 14 home runs.

Despite those impressive numbers, a promotion to St. Louis never materialized. The Cardinals already have an established left-handed hitter at first base in Alec Burleson, limiting Madris’ chances at his primary position. The club’s outfield is also heavily populated with left-handed bats, while Ivan Herrera has received the bulk of the designated hitter opportunities. With the organization prioritizing the development of younger players during its rebuilding process, there simply wasn’t a clear roster opening for a 30-year-old veteran.

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed Bligh Madris to a minor league contract. The utility player has 247 extra-base hits along with 403 RBI throughout his minor league career.

Rather than waiting for an opportunity that might never come, Madris has turned his Triple-A success into a chance to continue his career overseas. His move to the KBO marks the second international stop of his professional career after previously spending part of the 2020-21 season in the Australian Baseball League. The new deal is also expected to provide him with a larger guaranteed salary.

Over his Triple-A career, Madris owns a solid .255/.350/.450 slash line across 2,085 plate appearances. However, he has struggled to replicate that production in the majors. Between stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, and Detroit Tigers from 2022 through 2024, he produced a career .204/.273/.286 slash line in 228 plate appearances. His most productive MLB stretch came with Detroit in 2024, when he batted .269/.324/.358 over 75 plate appearances.

After the 2024 season, the Tigers re-signed Madris to another minor league contract following his outright assignment. However, injuries limited him to just 60 minor league games in 2025, preventing him from earning another major league opportunity before eventually signing with the Cardinals organization.
