The St. Louis Cardinals continue to make significant moves within their organization, and this time the spotlight is on one of the club’s most promising young arms. While much of the attention over the weekend centered on the 2026 MLB Draft, the Cardinals also reportedly took another important step in developing a pitcher who could soon impact the major league roster.
Earlier this season, St. Louis completed a blockbuster trade that sent versatile infielder Brendan Donovan to the Seattle Mariners. The deal has already looked like a major win for the Cardinals, who landed switch-pitching prospect Jurrangelo Cijntje, now ranked as the organization’s No. 4 prospect, along with two Competitive Balance Round B selections (Nos. 68 and 72), No. 17 prospect Tai Peete, and outfielder Colton Ledbetter. The trade was officially finalized over the weekend when the Cardinals selected outfielder Andrew Williamson from Central Florida and pitcher Dawson Montesa from West Virginia with the acquired draft picks.
As the draft wrapped up, another notable development emerged within the organization.
Cardinals Elevate Top Prospect to Triple-A
According to MiLB Central’s Chase Ford, the Cardinals are promoting Cijntje to Triple-A Memphis.
“The St. Louis Cardinals are promoting SHP Jurrangelo Cijntje to Memphis (Triple-A),” Ford wrote. “Cijntje had a 5.04 ERA along with 100 strikeouts in 80.1 innings for the Springfield Cardinals.”
Although his overall 5.04 ERA in 17 starts may not immediately stand out, the numbers show a pitcher making steady improvements as the season has progressed.
Beginning on May 16, Cijntje has posted a 4.41 ERA across his last 10 starts. His performance has improved even further since June 23, when he recorded a 3.92 ERA over 20 2/3 innings. During that stretch, he surrendered only nine earned runs, with six of those coming in a single outing on June 28.
His ability to miss bats has become one of his biggest strengths. Over his last four starts, the talented switch-pitcher has struck out 26 hitters in 20 2/3 innings, continuing to establish himself as one of the Cardinals’ fastest-rising prospects.

The promotion to Triple-A leaves Cijntje just one level away from reaching the major leagues. With the calendar only at July 12, it’s not unreasonable to believe he could make his MLB debut before the end of the 2026 season if he continues performing at his current level. While no promotion is guaranteed, the Cardinals have accelerated his development throughout the year, and he has consistently answered each challenge.
His emergence also comes at an important time for St. Louis. The Cardinals’ starting rotation has struggled for consistency, with Matthew Liberatore enduring a difficult season. If the club decides changes are needed later this year, Cijntje could quickly become a legitimate option to help strengthen the rotation.
For Cardinals fans, the latest promotion offers another reason for optimism. Widely viewed as a pitcher with frontline potential, Cijntje is now just one step away from the majors and appears to be closing in on his opportunity.
