The St. Louis Cardinals have relied extensively on their Triple-A Memphis depth this season while dealing with injuries and searching for contributors who can help at the major league level. Although several players have turned in impressive performances in the minors, strong production alone has not guaranteed a promotion to St. Louis.
That proved to be the case for one veteran first baseman who put together an impressive offensive campaign but never found a path to St. Louis. Rather than continue waiting for an opportunity, he has chosen to continue his career overseas.
The Cardinals have officially released veteran first baseman, a move that surprised many fans considering his previous major league experience and his productive season at Triple-A.
“The Cardinals have released veteran first baseman,” CBS Sports reported.
Not long after the transaction became official, it was revealed that the release came at the player’s request so he could accept an opportunity abroad.
“The (Cardinals) have transferred the contract of Memphis 1B to a team in the KBO,” Cardinal Nation reporter Brian Walton posted on X. “The lefty hitter had a .908 OPS in 71 Triple-A games.”
Bligh Madris’ offensive production appeared worthy of another shot in the majors, but the Cardinals’ roster situation left little room for a promotion.
“The 30-year-oldĀ signed a minor league contract with St. Louis last winter, and he has hit .277/.389/.519 with 14 home runs over 284 plate appearances with Triple-A Memphis,” Mark Polishuk wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “Without any injuries opening up roster space, Madris has instead parlayed his Triple-A success into a KBO contract. He’ll now make a larger guaranteed salary as he heads overseas for the second time in his pro career, following a brief stint in the Australian Baseball League during their 2020-21 season.”
Before deciding to move on, the veteran outfielder put together a career highlighted by several notable accomplishments in the minor leagues. He was named the Bobby Murcer Triple-A Championship MVP after delivering a standout postseason performance, earned Indianapolis Indians Rookie of the Year honors in 2021 after batting .267 with a .353 on-base percentage following his midseason promotion, and was recognized as the club’s August Player of the Month during his impressive rookie campaign. Earlier in his professional career, he also received NYP Mid-Season All-Star honors while developing in the New York-Penn League.
His departure highlights the difficult choices veteran minor leaguers often face. Even after establishing himself as a reliable depth option, there was no clear opening on the Cardinals’ major league roster.
Instead of remaining in Triple-A and waiting for an opportunity that might never come, Madris will continue his career in South Korea, where he is expected to receive regular playing time along with a guaranteed salary that surpasses what he likely would have earned in the Cardinals’ farm system.
For St. Louis, the move brings an end to a productive stint within the organization. If Madris thrives in the KBO and a future opening develops in the Cardinals’ infield, the possibility of a reunion could always remain on the table.
