Auburn football head coach Alex Golesh and his staff entered the 2026 season with a major rebuilding project ahead of them, especially along the offensive line. After departures through the transfer portal and players running out of eligibility, only three offensive linemen from the 2025 roster remained with the Tigers.
Former USF transfers Cole Best and Cole Skinner have quickly established themselves as veteran leaders, but the competition for starting jobs has been one of the biggest battles of fall camp. With 14 newcomers and three returning players fighting for roles, offensive line coach Tyler Hudanick believes redshirt freshman Jacobe Ward has positioned himself as a serious contender.
“Coming off his freshman year, how quickly can a redshirt freshman play in this league? Obviously, you guys see him and he’s physically gifted, but from the mental side of things and just processing at this level, especially how we play, he’s been impressive,” Hudanick said of Ward, according to Auburn 247.
Hudanick highlighted the importance of quick decision-making and understanding assignments, particularly with offensive coordinator Joel Gordon expected to implement a fast-paced system this season. The ability to process plays quickly will be critical for any young lineman hoping to earn snaps.
Ward originally committed to Auburn as part of Hugh Freeze’s 2025 recruiting class. The Savannah, Georgia, native was rated as the No. 99 interior offensive lineman nationally and the No. 141 overall recruit in the state. A standout at Benedictine Military School, Ward became the fifth offensive lineman to join Freeze’s recruiting class.
Although Ward has impressed throughout camp, Hudanick indicated that the offensive line rotation has not been finalized. Several position battles remain unresolved, with the competition at the guard spots drawing particular attention.
The Tigers will also need others to step up after redshirt freshman Tai Buster, who generated significant offseason excitement, suffered an injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for an extended period. His absence creates another opportunity for Auburn’s young offensive linemen to make their mark and secure valuable playing time.
