According to a TEAMtalk report, Everton showed interest in Valentin Castellanos as they looked to strengthen their attack during the summer transfer window. The Toffees made a late approach for the 27-year-old West Ham United striker on deadline day after their efforts to sign several other targets failed to materialize.
Everton reportedly opened talks over a potential deal and were prepared to put forward a package worth £45 million, including an initial £40 million transfer fee. West Ham were willing to consider selling the Argentine forward, but with very little time remaining in the window, the Hammers were unable to find a suitable replacement and ultimately refused to sanction the transfer.
Castellanos’ record at West Ham
Castellanos, widely known as Taty Castellanos, has made a positive impression since joining West Ham from Lazio for around £30 million earlier this year. Although his goalscoring numbers could have been higher, the striker has produced a respectable return, scoring seven times in 22 appearances for the East London side.
He has also started the 2026/27 campaign well, registering three goals and an assist across his first six appearances. Despite that encouraging form, uncertainty has surrounded his future at the London Stadium following West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League. That situation fueled speculation that Castellanos could leave the club and return to England’s top flight before the transfer window closed.
Everton’s failed striker pursuit
Castellanos was one of several forwards linked with Premier League clubs throughout the summer. Fulham considered making a move before turning their attention to Gonzalo Garcia, while Everton maintained their interest in the South American striker and eventually made a late attempt to bring him to Goodison Park.
The Toffees’ pursuit of a new striker was driven by their lack of options in the position. Following Beto’s move to Fiorentina, Thierno Barry remained the only specialist centre-forward in David Moyes’ squad.
Everton explored deals for Folarin Balogun, Joshua Zirkzee and Tammy Abraham, but none of those pursuits resulted in a transfer. Balogun appeared particularly close to joining after visiting Everton’s training facilities, but the move ultimately fell through.
That left Castellanos as a potential alternative, with Everton prepared to make a significant offer for the West Ham forward. However, West Ham’s reluctance to sell without securing a replacement brought the deal to an end.
Everton will now have to wait until the January transfer window if they want to add another striker to Moyes’ squad.
