David Moyes has made it clear that Everton’s players have collectively agreed they will not allow the club’s limited squad size to become an excuse during the season.
The Blues were left with only 18 senior outfield players following a chaotic conclusion to the transfer window, despite CEO Angus Kinnear repeatedly stating throughout the summer that strengthening the squad was the priority.
The lack of depth has raised concerns about Everton’s ability to compete across the campaign, but Moyes insists he wants his team focused on overcoming the challenge rather than using it as a reason for poor performances.
Speaking after Everton’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Manchester United, which capped a turbulent week that included reports of the Friedkin Group exploring outside investment, Moyes explained that the squad had already accepted the situation.
The Everton boss said there would be no excuses from the players or coaching staff, insisting the team would respond positively despite having fewer options available.
Moyes believes a smaller squad can create opportunities for players on the fringes to step up and prove they deserve regular involvement. He added that every member of the team must be prepared to contribute when called upon, especially during difficult periods.
The manager was forced to include teenage forward Braiden Graham among the substitutes against Manchester United, with summer signing Christian Norgaard still sidelined through injury. Moyes revealed the midfielder, who joined from Arsenal, is unlikely to return before the upcoming international break.
Moyes admitted managing a reduced squad will be challenging, particularly with demanding stretches of the Premier League schedule ahead that include three matches in a single week.
However, he believes Everton must find solutions rather than focus on their limitations.
