Dave Aranda desperately needed a victory like this.
He needed Baylor tight end Matthew Klopfenstein to gain just one more yard on the game-deciding two-point conversion attempt — the play that ultimately turned Auburn safety Eric Winters into the hero and left the Bears stunned at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Aranda needed Week 1 to provide a spark. He needed a statement victory against an SEC opponent, something that could fuel confidence and create momentum heading into the rest of the season.
Instead, Baylor walked away with a painful 17-16 defeat in the final moments, putting even more pressure on Aranda’s future as he enters his seventh season leading the program. The loss marked the third time in the past four years that the Bears have opened a season with a defeat.
Auburn has now played a direct role in two of those disappointing starts, including this season and last year. The other came in 2023, when Baylor suffered a shocking 42-31 home loss to Texas State. Former quarterback TJ Finley threw three touchdown passes and piled up 298 passing yards against Aranda and defensive coordinator Matt Powledge’s unit at McLane Stadium.
With the margin for error shrinking, Aranda now faces enormous pressure over the remainder of the schedule. The upcoming matchups against Prairie View A&M and Louisiana Tech have become must-win opportunities. Even victories in those games may not completely ease the concerns surrounding the program, especially with a late-September showdown against Deion Sanders and Colorado looming in Waco.
The closing stretch of the season also presents major challenges, with road games against BYU and Houston and a home matchup against Texas Tech creating a difficult path forward for the Bears.

Baylor’s performance made the loss even more frustrating. The Bears produced 436 total yards on offense, forced three turnovers defensively, and still managed to score only 16 points. Missed opportunities — including a missed 42-yard field goal and a questionable fourth-down decision instead of attempting a shorter field goal — proved costly in a one-point game.
The problem for Aranda is that competing closely no longer satisfies expectations. In today’s college football landscape, where programs are investing heavily in talent and roster construction, results matter more than encouraging performances.
Baylor showed toughness and fight against Auburn, but those qualities alone will not change the perception surrounding the program. Aranda’s only way to silence the criticism is by winning games.
Auburn understands that reality well. After moving on from Hugh Freeze, the Tigers are celebrating Alex Golesh’s ability to finish the job and turn a close contest into a victory.
