The 63-year-old manager is reportedly committed to his role at Goodison Park and has no intention of resigning, with Everton’s hierarchy expected to open discussions over a new contract before the end of the year if the team produces a strong first half of the season.
However, Moyes is understood to still carry frustration from the summer transfer window. Everton made seven additions, including the loan return of Jack Grealish and the permanent signing of Chelsea youngster Tyrique George for a reported £24 million, but the squad was left lacking depth in key areas, particularly at striker and full-back.
Rather than rushing into the free-agent market, Moyes would prefer to wait until January for further reinforcements. One potential option, Mauro Icardi, appears unlikely to become Everton’s solution despite the club having the financial ability to complete a deal. Concerns surrounding his fitness levels and how quickly he could adapt have reportedly reduced the chances of a move. The experienced forward did enjoy a productive campaign last season, scoring 16 goals in all competitions for Galatasaray.
Earlier reports suggested Moyes could consider his position if Everton failed to provide the necessary backing during the January window following a summer that saw Beto depart and the club fail to complete a deal for Folarin Balogun. The latest update, however, paints a clearer picture: Moyes wants to remain at Everton but expects stronger support when the transfer market reopens.
Everton Must Continue Supporting Moyes
Everton’s decision-makers would be wise to judge Moyes on his work with the resources available rather than react solely to the frustrations of the summer window.
The Toffees have made an unbeaten start to the Premier League season, showing that Moyes has managed to find solutions despite operating with a limited squad. The manager has successfully integrated several new arrivals while maintaining competitive performances, proving his ability to rebuild and adapt without disrupting the team’s balance.
Grealish has added creativity and top-level experience, while George represents a younger attacking investment with significant long-term potential. Moyes has shown he can blend established talent with emerging players as Everton look to develop a stronger foundation.
The biggest concern remains squad depth. The departures of Beto and Iliman Ndiaye, combined with the collapse of the Balogun deal, left Thierno Barry as the only recognised senior striker. Meanwhile, changes in defensive positions created further challenges that could become more difficult to manage over a demanding Premier League campaign.
Everton cannot expect Moyes to compete for ambitious targets while leaving him with limited options across important positions. Injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion could quickly expose those weaknesses if reinforcements are not added.
That makes potential contract talks a logical step, but they must be followed by meaningful action. The January window should focus on targeted improvements rather than short-term solutions that may not fit the manager’s plans.
While Icardi’s reputation could attract attention, Everton’s priority should be finding players who are ready to contribute and match Moyes’ vision.
