The Atlanta Braves are looking to complete a three-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies at Truist Park after winning the first two games of the series. However, the team has also made a notable move away from the field, bringing back a familiar pitcher just days after designating him for assignment.
The Braves announced earlier in the week that they had designated right-handed pitcher for assignment. The move came as Atlanta selected left-hander Bailey Falter to the major league roster, reinstated Reynaldo López from the injured list and placed Bryce Elder on the 15-day injured list, backdated to September 6, following surgery on his right knee.
Hernández subsequently elected free agency on Friday, September 11, giving him the opportunity to explore his next destination. However, his time away from the organization was brief.
MLB.com reported that the Braves had signed Hernández to a minor league contract. The club then assigned him to the Gwinnett Stripers, its Triple-A affiliate.
The reunion gives Atlanta another experienced pitching option in the organization as the team navigates the final stretch of the regular season. Although Hernández will not immediately return to the major league roster, his familiarity with the Braves could make him a useful depth piece if the team needs additional pitching help.
Hernández’s Seven-Year MLB Career
The 31-year-old Hernández is in his first season with the Braves and has spent time with the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers during his seven-year major league career.
Despite being designated for assignment, he has delivered solid results in his limited opportunities this season. Hernández has posted a 2-0 record with a 2.45 ERA across four games for Atlanta.
His experience across multiple organizations gives him a valuable background as the Braves continue to manage their pitching staff. The minor league agreement allows him to remain within the organization while working toward another opportunity at the major league level.
Braves Continue Their Push in the NL East
Atlanta entered Sunday’s game against Philadelphia with an 88-61 record through 149 games, placing the club at the top of the National League East standings. The Braves had already secured victories in the first two games of the series and were hoping to finish the weekend with a sweep.
The Phillies, however, prevented that from happening with a 9-4 victory in the series finale.
Following the Philadelphia series, Atlanta is scheduled to travel to Chicago for a three-game matchup against the Cubs beginning Monday night at Wrigley Field. With the regular season approaching its conclusion, the Braves will be focused on maintaining their position in the division while strengthening their pitching depth for the postseason.
Hernández’s return to the organization is a small but potentially useful move as Atlanta prepares for the challenges ahead.
