The St. Louis Cardinals appear poised to make a major move to strengthen their starting rotation, with Cleveland Guardians standout Foster Griffin emerging as a potential offseason acquisition. Following an impressive MLB comeback season, the left-hander could be on his way to St. Louis as the Cardinals look to secure a significant pitching addition ahead of the new season.
Griffin established himself as a valuable arm during the 2026 campaign, attracting attention from several teams after helping Cleveland make a postseason push. The left-hander joined the Guardians at the trade deadline and quickly became an important part of their pitching staff. Now, the Cardinals could consider bringing him to St. Louis as they evaluate their options for next season.
MLB.com’s Will Leitch recently identified five starting pitchers the Cardinals could pursue in free agency, with Griffin among the names highlighted. Leitch believes the veteran offers an appealing combination of reliability and affordability, describing him as a pitcher “with a higher floor but with a lower ceiling.”
“It was just a one-year deal, though, so the Nationals traded him to the Guardians for four prospects. Griffin struggled after the trade (5.19 ERA in nine starts) but proved helpful in the team’s postseason run. That has a lot of value, though, and Griffin would love to prove he can be durable two seasons in a row,” Leitch wrote.
Griffin’s 2026 campaign represented one of baseball’s more impressive comeback stories. After making a brief appearance in the majors earlier in his career, the left-hander spent three seasons pitching in Japan before returning to the United States on a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Washington Nationals.
He made the most of that opportunity, recording a 3.06 ERA across 22 starts and earning a place on the National League All-Star team. However, his one-year contract made him an attractive trade candidate, and Washington eventually sent him to Cleveland in exchange for four prospects.
Although Griffin struggled to maintain that level of production following the move, posting a 5.19 ERA in nine regular-season starts for the Guardians, he delivered when the postseason arrived.
In Game 3 of the division series against the White Sox, Griffin struck out seven batters in relief as Cleveland faced elimination, setting a franchise postseason record for a reliever. He subsequently started Game 1 of the American League Championship Series against the Rays and delivered another solid performance in Game 4. He finished the postseason with 15 strikeouts across 10 1/3 innings.
Cleveland has already indicated its interest in retaining the left-hander. Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti recently praised Griffin’s contributions on the field and in the clubhouse, confirming that the organization intends to remain in contact with him in the coming weeks.
For the Cardinals, Griffin could represent an intriguing option if they want to add experience and depth to their starting rotation without committing to a more expensive free agent. His All-Star season demonstrates his potential, while his postseason performances suggest he can contribute in high-pressure situations.
Whether Griffin returns to Cleveland or finds a new home in St. Louis, his strong 2026 campaign has given him a compelling case for another major-league opportunity. The Cardinals’ interest, if it develops into a serious pursuit, could make him a name worth monitoring throughout the offseason.
