While much of the spotlight surrounding North Carolina’s offseason has centered on upgrades in the backcourt, the Tar Heels were quietly making important progress in the frontcourt as well.
For a stretch, UNC’s offseason activity felt nonstop, with roster movement and transfer portal news arriving almost daily. Then, just as quickly, things slowed down. The silence had many wondering whether the Tar Heels had finished building their roster or were simply waiting for the right opportunities to emerge.
That answer came on Tuesday, when North Carolina suddenly made a series of significant moves. In a busy stretch of recruiting news, three transfer commitments were reported for the program, giving fresh momentum to an offseason that had recently gone quiet.
The first domino to fall was Terrence Brown, a player widely viewed as one of UNC’s top priorities in the portal. Soon after, former NC State standout Matt Able announced his decision to join the Tar Heels. But the surprises did not stop there.
Shortly after Able’s commitment became public, North Carolina added another important piece, this time focusing on the frontcourt.
Former Florida Atlantic big man Maxim Logue has committed to North Carolina, giving the Tar Heels a much-needed boost in size, depth, and interior presence. The French native arrives in Chapel Hill with two remaining years of college eligibility, making him a potentially valuable long-term addition.
Standing 6-foot-9 and weighing 232 pounds, Logue brings an impressive physical profile. He also reportedly owns a 7-foot-4 wingspan, a measurement that immediately stands out for any post player. His size and reach should allow him to impact the game as a rebounder, rim protector, and interior finisher.
Logue’s experience extends beyond college basketball. Before coming to the United States, he represented France’s national teams for three years, giving him valuable international competition experience. That background could prove beneficial as he adjusts to a larger role in the ACC.
Although injuries limited his production this past season at Florida Atlantic, Logue still flashed intriguing potential whenever healthy. One of his strongest performances came against Charlotte, where he posted 16 points and 10 rebounds in a dominant all-around outing. Games like that showed the type of impact he can have when fully available.
North Carolina fans should not view this move as a replacement for Henri Veesaar. The Tar Heels are still working to convince Veesaar to return for his senior season. However, if he decides to begin his professional career, UNC needed to strengthen its frontcourt depth and prepare for every scenario.
Logue helps solve that issue immediately.
He gives head coach Michael Malone another capable option in the rotation while also bringing upside that could grow with development. If UNC’s staff can unlock his full potential and keep him healthy, Logue may end up being one of the most underrated transfer additions in the country this offseason.
The tools are clearly there. Now it becomes about putting everything together at North Carolina.
