BREAKING: Braves Linked to Bold Trade for Former Gold Glove Winner Ahead of Deadline

The Atlanta Braves have been connected to another intriguing trade scenario ahead of the MLB trade deadline, with a new proposal suggesting the club could pursue New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe in an effort to strengthen its infield.

The idea, first outlined by Heavy.com, comes as Atlanta continues searching for answers at shortstop. With Ha-Seong Kim struggling to establish himself offensively and Mauricio Dubón spending more time in the outfield, the Braves could have an opening for a long-term solution in the middle of the infield.

According to the proposed deal, the Braves would acquire Volpe while sending first baseman Dom Smith, infielder Jim Jarvis, and pitching prospect Luke Sinnard to the Yankees.

While purely speculative, the package attempts to balance Atlanta’s need for a defensive-minded everyday shortstop with New York’s potential desire for additional organizational depth.

Volpe, once viewed as one of baseball’s brightest young talents, has endured an uneven start to the 2026 season. Through 128 at-bats, the former Gold Glove winner is batting .242 with one home run, 13 RBIs, 31 hits and 18 runs scored. Despite the modest production, his 88 OPS+ represents the highest mark of his MLB career to this point.

Yankees' Anthony Volpe takes responsibility for his rough day

For Atlanta, the appeal goes beyond Volpe’s offensive numbers.

The 25-year-old has already proven he can play elite defense at one of baseball’s most demanding positions, and the Braves could envision him either taking over as their everyday shortstop or sharing duties with Jorge Mateo depending on matchups and performance.

The proposal also reflects Atlanta’s evolving roster situation. Dom Smith enjoyed a strong beginning to the season but has cooled significantly in recent weeks, leading to speculation that he could become expendable if the Braves pursue a major addition before the deadline.

Whether the Yankees would seriously entertain moving Volpe remains another matter.

New York has remained committed to the young infielder despite his offensive inconsistency, and team officials have continued evaluating his role amid competition at shortstop rather than signaling a willingness to trade him.

From Atlanta’s perspective, however, the proposal makes some sense. President of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos has never been afraid to make aggressive moves when he believes they can improve the club’s championship chances, and adding a controllable young shortstop would fit that philosophy.

For now, the trade remains nothing more than a hypothetical scenario. But with the deadline approaching and both clubs looking to position themselves for postseason success, Volpe’s name is one worth monitoring if discussions between the Braves and Yankees ever become more than speculation.
