The St. Louis Cardinals are making a notable roster adjustment as they continue their push in the National League playoff race, bringing back a key infield option after months away from the lineup. The move comes at a crucial point in the season, with the club looking to add depth and stability during the final stretch.
The Cardinals announced that Ramón Urías has been activated from the 60-day injured list and immediately inserted into the starting lineup at second base. To make room on the active roster, St. Louis placed outfielder Everson Pereira on the 10-day injured list with a bruised left hand. The Cardinals still have flexibility on their 40-man roster, meaning no additional corresponding move was required.
Urías entered the season after signing a one-year, $2 million deal with St. Louis during spring training, hoping to provide veteran versatility around the infield. However, his 2026 campaign was interrupted after appearing in just 25 games and struggling offensively, posting a .158/.279/.316 slash line with a 71 wRC+ across 68 plate appearances.
The infielder landed on the injured list in early May because of right elbow lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow. While he initially began a rehab assignment, the Cardinals slowed down his return after just two games and eventually moved him to the 60-day injured list. The extended absence kept him sidelined for nearly four months.
Since restarting his rehab process in late July, Urías has received additional at-bats with Triple-A Memphis. Across his rehab appearances, he has struggled to find his rhythm at the plate, hitting .184/.231/.327 with a high strikeout rate. Still, the Cardinals’ biggest priority is ensuring he is fully healthy and capable of contributing during the stretch run.
The timing of his return could prove important as St. Louis fights for postseason positioning. The Cardinals sit just above .500 and remain within striking distance of the final NL Wild Card spot, making every roster decision increasingly significant.
Although the infield picture is crowded, St. Louis could benefit from Urías’ experience and defensive flexibility. Masyn Winn continues to provide elite defense at shortstop, while Alec Burleson has emerged as a major offensive contributor with 21 home runs and a strong overall season at first base. Rookie standout JJ Wetherholt has also been one of the team’s biggest surprises, delivering a breakout campaign on both sides of the ball.
The biggest opportunity could come at third base, where Blaze Jordan has experienced growing pains since earning his promotion to the majors. Jordan has posted a 73 wRC+ in 189 plate appearances, but the Cardinals remain encouraged by his potential after his strong Triple-A performance before the call-up.
Because of Urías’ recent offensive struggles, the veteran is unlikely to immediately take over an everyday role. Instead, St. Louis appears positioned to use him as a valuable bench piece, defensive replacement, and insurance option as the team navigates the final weeks of the season.
Meanwhile, Pereira’s injury creates another adjustment in the outfield rotation. The Cardinals claimed him off waivers from the White Sox earlier this month, and he quickly made an impression by producing a 147 wRC+ in a limited sample of 23 plate appearances with St. Louis. His overall season numbers remain solid, with a 109 wRC+ across 111 plate appearances.
With Pereira sidelined, José Fermín is expected to receive more opportunities in the outfield while Urías takes over as the club’s primary infield depth option.
The Cardinals are hoping the return of a healthy veteran can provide another boost as they chase a late-season playoff push. With the margin for error shrinking, every experienced player available could become an important piece of the postseason equation.
