BREAKING: Cardinals Make Stunning Announcement on Nathan Church After Injury Scare

The St. Louis Cardinals’ outfield situation just took another unexpected turn, and it couldn’t come at a more complicated time for the club. What was already a crowded and highly competitive group suddenly has a new layer of uncertainty after rookie outfielder Nathan Church was sidelined with an injury, forcing the organization to shuffle its roster and adjust on the fly. While the move may not seem long-term at first glance, the ripple effects could stretch far beyond a short IL stint.

Cardinals 25-Year-Old Could Soon Become St. Louis' Next Star Pitcher

Church has quietly become one of the more intriguing young pieces in the Cardinals’ lineup this season, showing flashes of steady defense, improving at-bats, and timely production that has helped stabilize the outfield rotation. Losing him—even temporarily—forces St. Louis to lean deeper into its organizational depth at a moment when every game and every roster decision feels increasingly important. The timing is especially tricky with other key outfielders either returning from injury or pushing for consistent playing time, creating a logjam that is only getting more intense by the day.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be without Nathan Church for at least the next week after the rookie outfielder was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder strain, retroactive to May 21.

To fill the roster spot, the Cardinals called up Bryan Torres. While the exact timeline for Church’s return remains unclear, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reported that he is scheduled to see a specialist on Tuesday. The encouraging news is that imaging revealed no major structural damage, with the issue believed to be inflammation.

Church reportedly began feeling discomfort in his shoulder before Wednesday’s game, and the issue worsened over the next two days without improvement. Manager Oli Marmol noted that the discomfort escalated during that stretch, prompting further evaluation and the eventual IL placement.

Despite the setback, Church’s early-season impact has been solid for a rookie. Through 45 games, he’s hit .247 with a .282 on-base percentage and a .390 slugging mark, adding five home runs, 18 RBIs, four stolen bases, and six walks while providing steady defense in the outfield.

His absence opened the door for Torres, who made an immediate impression after being called up. In his MLB debut across Saturday’s doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds, Torres went 3-for-8 with a home run, two walks, two RBIs, and a run scored, quickly turning heads after more than a decade in the minor leagues.

The timing of Church’s injury adds another layer to an already crowded Cardinals outfield situation. Lars Nootbaar is currently on a rehab assignment and nearing a return, while Victor Scott II and Jordan Walker continue to see regular playing time. Once Nootbaar is activated and Church returns, St. Louis will be faced with some difficult roster decisions as the outfield logjam tightens.
