The St. Louis Cardinals have seen another young prospect step away from baseball.
Just weeks after announcing on June 30 that 23-year-old pitching prospect Owen Rice had retired, the Cardinals revealed another surprising departure. This time, it is 23-year-old infield prospect, who has also decided to end his playing career.
Along with Christian Martin’s retirement, the Cardinals announced that No. 17 prospect Tai Peete—acquired from the Seattle Mariners during the offseason in the Brendan Donovan trade—has been activated from the seven-day Injured List. Right-handed pitching prospect Alan Reyes has also been activated from the 60-day Injured List.
“OF Tai Peete (A+) has been activated from the 7-day IL,” the Cardinals announced. “RHP Alan Reyes (FCL) has been activated from the 60-day IL. INF Christian Martin (A+) has retired.”
The headline developments are Martin’s retirement and Peete’s return from the Injured List.
Christian Martin Retires
The Cardinals selected Martin in the 18th round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of Virginia Tech. During his final collegiate season, he hit .313/.447/.502 with a .950 OPS, six home runs, 36 RBIs, 16 doubles, and seven stolen bases across 54 games. He also spent time with Falmouth in the Cape Cod League.
Martin began his professional career with Class-A Palm Beach after being drafted, appearing in 23 games in 2024 and batting .206. He logged his only full professional season in 2025, playing 90 games across the FCL Cardinals, Class-A Palm Beach, and High-A Peoria. Over that span, he posted a .252/.354/.328 slash line with two home runs, 32 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases, flashing intriguing potential. This season, Martin appeared in 52 games between Class-A and High-A, batting .213 before deciding to retire.
His departure leaves the Cardinals without a versatile organizational depth piece capable of playing second base, third base, and left field. While it won’t have an immediate impact on the major league roster, losing a young player with developmental upside is never ideal.
Tai Peete Activated
Peete’s return is encouraging for the Cardinals. The 20-year-old has been limited to just 34 games this season because of injuries, but he remains one of the organization’s most promising young players, ranking No. 17 among the club’s prospects.
In those 34 games, Peete has slashed .252/.331/.476 with an .807 OPS, five home runs, and 26 RBIs. He was the top position-player prospect acquired from Seattle in the Brendan Donovan trade, and now that he’s back on the field, he’ll have another opportunity to continue his development and show why the Cardinals were eager to bring him into the organization.
