BREAKING: Cubs Demote Another Player In Surprise Painful Decision

The Cubs were swift to pull the plug on a young player after a costly mistake this weekend.

On Monday, Chicago optioned outfielder Kevin Alcántara back to Triple-A Iowa, doing so less than a day after a major baserunning blunder. The 23-year-old had been with the club for a little over two weeks but failed to leave much of a positive impression, with Sunday night’s mistake standing out as the defining moment of his brief call-up.

During the bottom of the eighth inning in a 1–1 game against the Giants, Alcántara entered as a pinch runner for Miguel Amaya after a leadoff walk. He later advanced to third when Michael Busch reached on an infield single, aided by a throwing error from pitcher Erik Miller. With runners on the corners and no outs, Alex Bregman came to the plate—and that’s when the inning unraveled for Chicago.

Bregman lined a 96 mph sinker straight to first baseman Rafael Devers, who made the catch. For reasons that proved costly, Alcántara broke for home immediately on contact, getting caught in no man’s land as Devers secured the out. Devers then calmly threw to third baseman Matt Chapman to complete the double play.

The ball’s exit velocity was just 68 mph, making the read especially questionable, as it never looked deep enough to justify a break for the plate. The misjudgment killed a promising Cubs rally and drew criticism for being an inexcusable mistake in that situation.

Ian Happ followed with a strikeout to end the inning, and the Giants eventually secured a 2–1 win in 10 innings.

Chicago responded by sending Alcántara back to the minors on Monday, with Matt Shaw expected to be activated from the injured list on Tuesday. Given the circumstances, the demotion was widely seen as a consequence of his costly error.

Alcántara, once a highly regarded prospect, has now made brief MLB appearances in each of the past three seasons. In 2025, he showed flashes of potential, hitting .364/.417/.364 with an RBI across 10 games, producing a 128 wRC+. However, consistency has remained elusive.

This season, he appeared in 12 games and struggled significantly, batting .111/.200/.111 with a wRC+ of -4 across just nine at-bats. At Triple-A Iowa, he has performed better, hitting .242/.330/.567 with 15 home runs and 32 RBIs in 41 games, good for a 123 wRC+.

Originally signed by the Yankees for $1 million out of the Dominican Republic in 2018, Alcántara was traded to the Cubs in 2021 in the Anthony Rizzo deal. Standing 6-foot-6, he brings a rare blend of speed, athleticism, and raw power, with defensive versatility across all three outfield spots.

Despite the tools, he has yet to fully translate his ability to the major league level, and Sunday’s miscue underscored that ongoing development gap.
