The battle for the top wide receiver role on the Green Bay Packers is heating up, and Matthew Golden is ready to fight for it—especially now that he’s signed a deal that puts him at the top of the pay scale.
The Packers officially announced Golden’s addition to the roster after agreeing to a four-year contract worth \$17,575,300, which includes a \$9,422,056 signing bonus.
Despite the lucrative deal, Golden will still need to compete with Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Malik Heath for a starting spot. With the team using the 23rd overall pick on him, expectations are high for him to prove he’s worth the investment.
Golden now holds the distinction of being the highest-paid receiver on the team based on average annual salary.

Matthew Golden must deliver
Golden entered the team through the 2025 NBA Draft with a lot of buzz surrounding him — and naturally, plenty of expectations. He became the first wide receiver the team selected in the first round since 2001.
His arrival comes at a time when the Packers’ receiving unit is under the spotlight, with some observers believing there’s still room for improvement.
Fortunately for Golden, he’s surrounded by veterans ready to support him. Quarterback Jordan Love was quick to reach out with a congratulatory text after the draft. Another mentor is wideout Jayden Reed, who passing game coordinator Jason Vrable says has taken on a leadership role with the rookies. Reed, now working toward a second contract, is setting the tone.
“I really want to give him credit — he’s standing behind Matthew Golden and helping him with every single play,” Vrable said. “He’s also guiding Mecole Hardman, who just joined the team. While our receiver room has a strong bond, Reed is going above and beyond. He’s a natural leader — always has been.”
As for Golden, selected 23rd overall, he’s embracing the professional stage with determination and focus.
“Being on the field is when I feel my best,” Golden said. “It’s like nothing can hold me back. I can just concentrate on football — that’s what keeps me going and keeps me pushing forward.”
