BREAKING: Former MVP, Championship-Winning Guard Headed to Lexington in Stunning Move

Kentucky basketball’s next expected visitor from the NCAA transfer portal is a name well known around the local hoops scene. The former star guard at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester, has returned to Central Kentucky and is scheduled to take an official recruiting visit with Mark Pope and the Wildcats today after previous stops at Morehead State and Washington State.

He built a strong reputation during five standout seasons under head coach Josh Cook at George Rogers Clark, and now he could be exploring what may become the final destination of his college career. The 6-foot-4 guard is coming off his junior season at Washington State, where he averaged 7.8 points and 2.6 assists per game while knocking down 38.7 percent of his three-point attempts for the Cougars.

Jerone Morton’s college journey has been one of steady development. As a freshman at Morehead State, Morton played a reserve role and averaged 2.2 points with 1.3 rebounds per contest. Even in limited minutes, he gained valuable experience on an Eagles team that captured both the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season and tournament championships before earning an NCAA Tournament berth.

By his sophomore season, Morton had taken a major leap. He posted career highs of 10.4 points, 3.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, helping raise his profile enough to make the move to Washington State, which competed in the West Coast Conference during the 2025-26 season.

Now back in the portal, Morton is drawing interest from Kentucky. He owns a career 34.2 percent mark from beyond the arc, and Cook believes his shooting growth has been one of the biggest improvements in his game.

“He’s learned to shoot the 3 pretty consistent,” Cook said. “That’s something we even talked about this year when he was at Washington State. His first year, he was trying to get in a good flow of it, and then by the end of the year, he’s knocking down open shots and being consistent from that range.”

Cook also praised Morton’s defensive versatility and toughness.

“Honestly, he’s just become more and more of a better teammate,” Cook said. “He’s a great defender. You can’t find 6-4 guys that can guard multiple spots and have the toughness to do it.”

Morton’s high school résumé remains one of the most decorated in recent Kentucky history. He scored 2,684 career points, hit 214 three-pointers, and helped George Rogers Clark win five 40th District titles, four 10th Region championships, and the 2022 Sweet 16 state title — the program’s first in 71 years. He was also named MVP of that tournament.

Cook credited Morton with helping elevate the program’s standards.

“Jerone helped establish that culture,” he said. “We’re no longer just playing for regional championships. We’re playing for state championships.”

Even after leaving for college, Morton has stayed connected to his roots. While back in town this week, he visited George Rogers Clark during offseason workouts.

“When he’s back in town, that’s the first place he wants to come to,” Cook said.

If Kentucky lands Morton, he would join Washington transfer Zoom Diallo and Furman transfer Alex Wilkins as portal guards added this offseason.
