The disappointing year forced the Rangers to move on from another major piece of their former core, trading star winger Artemi Panarin as the franchise shifted toward a new direction. Heading into the 2026/27 season, New York has retooled its roster with several fresh faces expected to play important roles, including Oliver Bjorkstrand and Pavel Dorofeyev. However, the biggest reason for optimism may come from within, as rising young forward Gabe Perreault is being viewed as a potential breakout candidate.

With an expanded role expected in 2026/27, Perreault could become one of the most important pieces of the Rangers’ offense. He is projected to receive opportunities on the team’s top power-play unit while potentially skating alongside Mika Zibanejad and Dorofeyev on the top line.
Although expecting Perreault to immediately become a 100-point superstar may be unrealistic, his combination of offensive instincts, skill, and hockey IQ gives him the tools to develop into an All-Star-caliber player. The upcoming season could represent the beginning of his emergence as a cornerstone of the Rangers’ future.
Can New York Return to Stanley Cup Contention?
The Rangers once believed their veteran core of Chris Kreider, Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Jacob Trouba could lead them to a championship. While that group helped deliver multiple deep playoff runs, including Eastern Conference Final appearances in 2022 and 2024, the franchise ultimately fell short of its ultimate goal.
Now, only Zibanejad remains from that core, with general manager Chris Drury overseeing a significant roster transformation. The Rangers are attempting to rebuild on the fly while still competing in a difficult Eastern Conference.
Despite last season’s struggles, the combination of new additions, emerging young talent, and elite goaltending gives New York reason for optimism. If Perreault takes the next step and forms a dangerous offensive group with Dorofeyev, Zibanejad, and Lafreniere, the Rangers could quickly become a serious Wild Card contender.
After several seasons of championship expectations ending in disappointment, New York enters 2026/27 with a refreshed identity.
