BREAKING: Giants Make Four Major Roster Transactions in Stunning Move to Supercharge Team

When the San Francisco Giants learned they would need to complete two games on Wednesday, the organization was forced to quickly adjust its plans.

The situation arose after Tuesday night’s matchup against the Atlanta Braves was suspended in the second inning because of rain. With one starter already used, the Giants opted to move scheduled Wednesday starter Robbie Ray into the resumed game, taking over in the bottom of the second inning.

The move paid off. Ray delivered an outstanding performance, allowing just two hits across 6.1 innings while helping lead San Francisco to a 7-2 victory. However, that success left the Giants needing a new pitching strategy for the second game of the day.

Under MLB rules, teams are permitted to add a 27th player for doubleheaders, and clubs typically use that extra roster spot on a pitcher. San Francisco followed that approach, making several roster moves before Game 2 that not only provided a starter but also strengthened the bullpen.

Just How Important Has Robbie Ray Been for Giants This Season?

Prior to the nightcap, the Giants announced the following roster moves:

“LHP Carson Whisenhunt appointed as 27th man

LHP Matt Gage returned from rehabilitation assignment and reinstated from the 15-day IL

LHP Reiver Sanmartin optioned to Triple-A Sacramento

OF Will Brennan cleared waivers and outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento”

Whisenhunt was selected to start the second game of the doubleheader. The left-hander has spent the entire 2026 season with Triple-A Sacramento, making this his first major league appearance of the year.

The 2025 campaign marked Whisenhunt’s MLB debut, during which he started five games and posted a 2-1 record with a 5.01 ERA. Despite that experience, offseason additions such as Tyler Mahle, combined with an underwhelming spring training performance, prevented him from securing a spot in either the starting rotation or bullpen entering this season.

Meanwhile, Gage provides the Giants with immediate bullpen reinforcement following his return from the injured list. The veteran left-hander was sidelined on June 3 due to right knee inflammation and completed a brief rehab assignment over the weekend, making one appearance for Triple-A Sacramento before being activated.

Gage has quietly been one of San Francisco’s most reliable relievers this season. Across 29 appearances, he owns a 4-1 record and a 2.63 ERA, while recording 19 strikeouts and 13 walks over 24 innings. Opposing hitters have managed just a .209 batting average against him.

Sanmartin, who was activated from the 60-day injured list on June 10, appeared in two games for the Giants before being sent back to Triple-A. In 3.1 innings of work, he went 1-0 with an 8.10 ERA, striking out four batters while issuing one walk.

As for Brennan, the Giants designated him for assignment on June 10. After clearing waivers and not being dealt before the deadline, he was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento, where he will remain as organizational depth.
