The Philadelphia Phillies are among the top contenders expected to be active buyers ahead of this year’s MLB trade deadline. While addressing their shaky bullpen remains the top priority, adding depth to the outfield is also high on the agenda. However, with limited payroll flexibility and a prospect pool lacking depth, the front office may need to pursue lower-cost options or consider trading a top prospect.
One low-risk, potentially rewarding move could involve acquiring Taylor Ward from the Los Angeles Angels. Although the veteran outfielder has struggled offensively for much of the season, he recently showcased his power again, hitting his 17th home run of 2025 over the Green Monster at Fenway Park. It was a three-run shot in an 11-9 loss to the Red Sox, a timely reminder of what he’s capable of. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski would be wise to take notice.
Ward presents a compelling trade option due to both his affordability and contract situation—he’s under team control through 2026. This gives the Phillies flexibility: they could view him as a short-term boost or potentially a longer-term contributor without needing to sacrifice significant assets.
Philadelphia’s current outfield—featuring Max Kepler, Johan Rojas, Nick Castellanos, and Brandon Marsh—has underperformed at the plate. Injecting some offensive power into that group would be a welcome upgrade, and Ward could offer that at a relatively low cost—provided the Angels are willing to move him.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand has noted that the Angels are one of several teams in a gray area between buying and selling. They’re still within reach of a Wild Card berth, but their plans could shift depending on how the standings look as the July 31 deadline approaches.
