Kansas State continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail, adding another significant piece to its future secondary. The Wildcats secured a commitment from one of Texas’ top defensive back prospects, further strengthening what is shaping up to be a historic 2027 recruiting class.
Four-star defensive back Joshua Vilmael announced his commitment to Kansas State on Thursday, giving the Wildcats another major recruiting victory. The Richmond, Texas native attends William B. Travis High School and is regarded as one of the premier defensive backs in the country.
Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 185 pounds, Vilmael is ranked as the No. 307 overall player in the 2027 recruiting cycle, the No. 35 cornerback nationally, and the No. 44 prospect in Texas. His decision came after an official visit to Manhattan, with Kansas State beating out several Power Four programs for his pledge. Vilmael had previously visited North Carolina and was scheduled to visit Florida State before ultimately deciding to commit to the Wildcats.
Kansas State also benefited from a family connection in the recruitment. Joshua’s older brother, Josiah Vilmael, is an incoming freshman defensive back and a highly regarded member of the Wildcats’ 2026 recruiting class.

As a junior, Joshua recorded three tackles for loss, two interceptions, four forced fumbles, seven pass breakups, and four blocked kicks, showcasing his ability to impact games in multiple ways.
“The Kansas State coaching staff is on a recruiting heater, and Vilmael adds another log to the fire. I am particularly intrigued by the possibility of having a Vilmael family reunion on the field at corner. Listing the starting corners as J. Vilmael and leaving it at that saves me a few seconds of typing.”
Vilmael’s combination of size, athleticism, and physicality makes him an ideal fit for Kansas State’s defensive scheme.
“Joshua has all the physical attributes this coaching staff covets. He’s got a lanky frame (listed anywhere from 6’ 1.5’ – 6’3”), speed to burn, and isn’t afraid to get physical at the line of scrimmage. Remember, if you can’t tackle on the outside, you can’t play in Jordan Peterson’s defense; that shouldn’t be a problem.”

Kansas State’s recruiting surge continues to turn heads nationally.
“This is shaping up to be one of the best recruiting classes, on paper, in Kansas State history. It currently ranks 2nd in the Big 12 and 30th nationally, with a few more high-quality recruits set to commit this week.”
The excitement surrounding the program extends beyond recruiting success.
“If this coaching staff executes as well in games as it does in recruiting, this could be a fun stretch of football for the Wildcats. Potentially, a long, fun stretch with Coach Klein ensconced in Manhattan long-term.”
