Breaking News: Caleb Wilson’s UNC Future Decided After Mike Malone Hiring

Five-star freshman Caleb Wilson was the clear standout on the North Carolina Tar Heels roster this season, averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. His impressive freshman campaign was cut short on March 5 after he suffered a broken thumb, sidelining him just weeks before the ACC and NCAA Tournaments.

Without Wilson, North Carolina watched a double-digit lead slip away in the opening round of March Madness against VCU. Not long after that early exit, the program made a major change, parting ways with head coach Hubert Davis. Wilson, who was recruited by Davis, made sure to publicly express his gratitude and appreciation for the coach during the transition.

Soon after, Chapel Hill ushered in a new era by hiring former NBA head coach and champion Michael Malone. At the same time, speculation grew around Wilson’s future, with fans and analysts waiting to see whether he would return for a sophomore season or declare for the NBA Draft.

On Tuesday, Wilson made his decision official. In a heartfelt announcement, he revealed he will enter the 2026 NBA Draft. He described his freshman year as the most enjoyable of his life, noting the growth, adversity, and unforgettable experiences he shared with the program. Wilson emphasized how proud he was to represent North Carolina and said he gave everything he had each day.

Following the announcement, several of his teammates shared messages of support. Seth Trimble, Elijah Davis, and Derek Dixon all congratulated Wilson and praised his journey. Each of those players is also moving on, as Trimble and Davis have exhausted their eligibility, while Dixon entered the transfer portal and committed to Arizona.

Despite missing the NCAA Tournament, Wilson’s draft stock remains strong. He was projected to be selected fourth overall in ESPN’s March mock draft. While the injury may have limited his exposure compared to other top prospects, Wilson is still viewed as one of the highest-upside players in the upcoming NBA Draft class.
