The former Everton star was granted permission to hold talks with the Toffees in the closing stages of the transfer window, as both clubs explored a potential £35 million agreement.
However, the proposed move failed to materialise, and Richarlison’s situation at Tottenham has only become more complicated since then.
Richarlison frozen out at Spurs
Tottenham have now confirmed that the 29-year-old has been excluded from their 25-man Premier League squad for the opening half of the season.
As a result, Richarlison will not be able to feature in another league match for Spurs until squad registrations are updated in January, unless he falls under a special exemption — which he does not.
His absence is particularly surprising considering he finished last season as Tottenham’s top scorer, finding the net 12 times.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi has since explained that Richarlison was offered a contract extension several months ago but rejected the proposal after making it clear he wanted to move on.
Turkish side Trabzonspor have shown interest in bringing him to the Super Lig, although Tottenham previously turned down offers from the club. Recent reports have even claimed Spurs could explore the possibility of ending his contract if they cannot find a permanent solution.
That remains only speculation at this stage, but it is increasingly clear that Richarlison’s future in north London is uncertain.
That does not necessarily mean a return to Everton is close.
The transfer window has already shut, and following the frustration of their failed pursuit of Folarin Balogun, the Toffees have other priorities to address.
However, Everton were actively discussing a possible reunion with Richarlison just days ago. Now, he finds himself unable to play Premier League football for Tottenham and remains determined to leave.
That is why supporters may continue to wonder whether this story could resurface in the future.
The reunion did not happen this time around — but the door may not be completely closed.
