After losing the World Series in 2022, the Philadelphia Phillies have done everything they can to win it back.
Since then, the Phillies have emerged as one of baseball’s top teams and consistent challengers. However, they have failed to reach the fall classic and have been repeatedly disappointed in the playoffs.
This season appears to be one of their last chances before the window closes, with key players ready to enter the open market shortly. With that in mind, the Phillies have jumped out to a 25-18 record, two and a half games behind the division-leading New York Mets.
Baltimore’s Collapse and a Potential Trade Asset
The Baltimore Orioles have been one of the most underwhelming teams in the league this season. With a rough 15-26 start, they now sit at the bottom of the AL East, leading many to wonder whether it’s time for the team to pivot and become sellers ahead of the trade deadline.
One MLB insider believes the Orioles may look to part ways with one of their most seasoned players.
During an appearance on MLB Central, Jon Morosi discussed the possibility of Baltimore trading veteran outfielder Cedric Mullins.
“As we consider the direction things are heading, one name I’m closely watching is Cedric Mullins,” Morosi said. “He’s exactly the kind of player who can make a significant difference for a contender at the deadline.”
Morosi even named potential landing spots that could benefit from Mullins’ skill set.
“The Phillies would be an excellent match, and I could also see the Rangers being a strong fit,” he added. “Frankly, there are few teams that wouldn’t benefit from adding someone like Mullins.”

Steady Amid the Chaos
Despite the Orioles’ struggles, Mullins has remained a reliable contributor. He’s slashing .230/.335/.446 with a .781 OPS, and his defensive value continues to shine. According to Baseball Savant, he ranks in the 77th percentile in Outs Above Average, showing he’s still an elite defender even past age 30.
Mullins’ breakout season came in 2021 when he recorded 6.2 bWAR, hit 30 home runs, and finished as a top-10 MVP candidate.
A Clear Need in Philadelphia
The Phillies have received subpar production from center field this season. Brandon Marsh, who has battled injuries, is slashing just .270 OBP with a .547 OPS and 53 OPS+, a far cry from his 3+ bWAR performances in previous years. He’s on pace for a negative WAR season.
With the Mets playing like one of the top teams in baseball and the Braves back at .500 after a rough start, Philadelphia can’t afford to be passive if they want to win the division.
If they want to make a serious push this postseason, acquiring a player like Mullins—who brings value both offensively and defensively—could be a crucial move. For the Orioles, moving a pending free agent like Mullins could be one of the few positives in what has been a bleak season.
