The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be one of the more aggressive teams ahead of the upcoming MLB trade deadline, with their biggest area of need still being a right-handed-hitting outfielder.
The Philadelphia Phillies have found their right-handed-hitting outfielder before the trade deadline. The 26-year-old has been involved in trade speculation for multiple seasons, despite Angels owner Arte Moreno attempting to put those rumors to rest. Still, he remained an intriguing option for Philadelphia and could provide a major boost in right field, especially during a potential playoff run in September and October.
While Jo Adell may have not been the ultimate Angels outfield target Phillies fans would dream about — that would likely be Mike Trout — it has become increasingly clear that Trout is unlikely to be moved this season. That makes Adell a far more realistic and attainable option.
Through 96 games this season, Adell is hitting .245 with 13 home runs, 15 doubles, 53 RBI, and a .395 slugging percentage. His production would represent a clear upgrade over Derek Hill and could give the Phillies another power threat in the lineup.
A potential trade package that could be enough to convince the Angels to move Adell could look something like this:
Phillies receive: OF Jo Adell
Angels receive: P Andrew Painter, prospects Gabriel Rincones Jr. and Alex McFarlane
Before becoming a fixture in the Los Angeles Angels’ outfield, Jo Adell established himself as one of the organization’s most accomplished minor league players.
The former first-round pick earned MiLB.com Organization All-Star honors five times (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023), a recognition given to standout performers throughout an organization’s minor league system.
Adell’s consistent production and status as one of the Angels’ top prospects helped him remain among the franchise’s most highly regarded young players throughout his development. His repeated selections as an organization All-Star showcased his power potential, athleticism, and ability to impact games at multiple levels of the minor leagues.
If Los Angeles decided to trade Adell, the organization would likely demand a strong return centered around young talent, and this three-player package could be enough to get a deal done.
Painter’s trade value has fallen after his recent struggles in the minor leagues, making this a possible opportunity for Philadelphia to sell high on his remaining upside while addressing a major need. Rincones Jr. and McFarlane, meanwhile, are both ranked among the Phillies’ top-20 prospects and would give the Angels additional pieces to build around for the future.
Who Says ‘No’ To This Potential Trade?
It’s difficult to imagine the Phillies rejecting a deal like this. Given president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski’s aggressive approach to roster building, he would likely be willing to part with these three players if it increased Philadelphia’s chances of winning a World Series this season — and adding Adell could certainly do that.
From the Angels’ perspective, trading Adell would also make sense if they want to maximize his value before he reaches free agency. However, owner Arte Moreno has developed a reputation among fans as one of the more difficult decision-makers in baseball, which could impact the team’s willingness to make a move.
Regardless, Phillies fans, if it’s not Jo Adell, which outfielders would you like to see the team pursue before the Aug. 3 trade deadline?
