BREAKING: Philadelphia Phillies Officially Cut Ties With Another Pitcher

The Philadelphia Phillies have adjusted their pitching depth by moving on from a veteran arm in the system.

Philadelphia has released seven year MLB veteran from his minor league deal, as revealed on the transactions log.

The Phillies signed him to a minor league deal in December after a difficult 2025 MLB season in which he pitched for four different teams. In Triple A, the left handed pitcher struggled significantly, finishing 1–2 with a 10.38 ERA across 15 appearances. His final outing was especially rough, as he recorded just 0.1 innings while allowing 8 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks.

According to international baseball reporter Edwin Hernandez, Cabrera is expected to attract overseas interest following his release from the Phillies.

“RP Génesis Cabrera, released today by the Phillies, is looking for overseas opportunities. According to sources. I’m told also that NPB teams were interested on him last offseason,” Hernandez wrote on X.

Cabrera originally signed with the Tampa Bay Rays as an international free agent in 2013. He made his MLB debut in 2019 with the St. Louis Cardinals after being acquired in 2018 in a deal involving Tommy Pham.

After spending parts of five seasons with the Cardinals, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023. Following the 2024 season, he entered free agency and signed with the New York Mets.

In 2025, Cabrera pitched for the Mets, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Minnesota Twins before landing a minor league deal with Philadelphia.

Across the 2025 MLB season, Cabrera went 0–1 with a 6.54 ERA in 40 appearances. Over his career, he holds a 17–15 record with a 4.24 ERA in 312 games.

Phillies Bring Back Lou Trivino

Along with releasing Cabrera, the Phillies also added another arm to their pitching depth.

Philadelphia announced the team has signed veteran right handed pitcher Lou Trivino to a minor league deal.

Trivino originally signed with Philadelphia late last year and returned on another minor league deal this offseason. After posting a 3–0 record with a 2.77 ERA in 10 relief appearances in Triple A within the organization, he activated a clause requiring either a major league promotion or release, and the Phillies chose to release him.

He later signed with the Baltimore Orioles but struggled in brief action. Trivino finished with an 18.00 ERA over two appearances, though his stint included one disastrous outing against the Yankees where he allowed 6 runs in 0.2 innings, followed by 2.1 scoreless innings against the Athletics.

Just days after his release, Trivino has rejoined Philadelphia and will provide additional depth in Triple A while potentially serving as a future bullpen option.

Philadelphia Turning Season Around

The Phillies began the season in poor form, a stretch that ultimately led to the firing of manager Rob Thomson.

Since promoting Don Mattingly to interim manager, the team has surged, with Kyle Schwarber playing a central role in the turnaround. Schwarber became the first player to reach 20 home runs this season and emphasized that team success matters most.

“I’m just happy that we are finding a way to win games,” Schwarber said. “That’s the biggest thing. Yeah, sure, you want to have success at the plate. Do you want to do a lot of positive things? Yes. … You are way happier with the win than the loss. I’m happy [the home runs] are correlating with the wins.”

The Phillies are now 23–23 following Saturday’s win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
